Interesting point on stuttering /stammering

By Mark Irwen Chair of ISA
I intend making comment at the IFA Congress in Dublin. Prior to this I will discuss it with the ISA board. My initial idea is that Stuttering should refer to repititions, prolongations and blocks, while Stammering should refer to Covert Stuttering(substitutions, avoidances and circumlocutions) as well as feelings of shame, anger, frustration and the consequent attitudinal issues. Covert stuttering is rarely discussed by SLP's which is significant since, for the pws I know, it is the most important issue in the entire syndrome. Perhaps the existence of the two words gives us a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness in this area.

People could then be described, diagnosed and treated more effectively. For example someone might well have a mild stutter with a severe stammer which will necessitate different treatment than someone with the reverse symptomatology.
