Why the Project is required

For some time, Indian Stutterers/Stammerers have been contacting various National and International Stuttering/Stammering Associations asking for help. Also in a number of Yahoo groups, Indians have been posting various messages that highlight their plight when living in India because of the attitude towards Indian people who stutter/stammer.

On searching for information on the Internet, it became clear that there was no National Association for people who stuttered/stammered.  There were some therapy sites scattered around some major cities, and one government funded institute at Mysore. There appeared to be few links between the sporadic treatment help.  A variety of sites were looked at, none of them had any basic information about Stuttering/Stammering.

The requests for help reached the ISA, because the ISA seemed to be the most suitable organisation to begin a new work in this area.  The outreach section of ISA, believes that the best way to help people who stutter/stammer is to help them to help themselves.  There are various ways of doing this.  For a Nation such as India, there appears to be a lot of scope for PWSs to help themselves.

The formation of The Indian Stammering Association  (TISA); the formation of self-help groups in all the major cities in all the States; the dissemination of Stuttering/Stammering information via a web site and all different kinds of media seem to be a very good place to start.

The ISA project "to Raise the Awareness of Stuttering/Stammering in India" was born.
